dollhouse purse

I have been making these for christmas, warning they are addictive. I loved the directions but feel that I have made a few changes that really are easier than the original. You can find the orginal here. http://uklassinus.blogspot.com/2008/08/fabric-dollhouse-tutorial.html

Fabric dollhouse tutorial
you will need
Fabric for the interior: 9 inches by 21 inches and two pieces 6 inches by 9 inches
Fabric for the exterior: (same as interior) 9" x 21" and two pieces 6" x 9" ..........::
two 10.5"x 13.5" sheets of plastic canvas (I used #10 mesh) ..........::
fleese two 9x21 inch pieces and 4 6x9 inch pieces
Buttons and elastic cord
2 Sewn fabric strips for handles (optional)

1. From the plastic canvas cut out..........three 4" by 6" rectangles..........two 2¾" by 6" rectangles..........and 2 house-shaped pieces with 4" base, 4" sides and 2¾" roof (see diagram A)

The pieces should fit together like this:

2. Using the 6" x 9" pieces, place an interior fabric piece right sides facing an exterior fabric piece, place 2 fleese pieces on top. Mark 1/2inch seam allowence around end piece. Sew around 3 sides of the sandwiched pieces leaving the bottom open. turn the fabric and fleese inside out. the two fabric pieces should be on the inside the fleese on the inside. Slide the plastic canvas Repeat for the other end panel.
4. Using the 9" x 21" pieces, place the fabric right sides facing 2 pieces fleese on top. The following should then be sandwiched between the fabrics, so that their edges / ends will be caught when you sew along the side edge of the fabrics:..........one of the end panels..........elastic loops (or flap for velcro or zip or ribbons for ties at both ends - whichever you chose).Again, I like to first sandwich the batting covered panels between the fabrics - in the order shown in the 2nd diagram above - and pin the fabrics around them, including a pin between each panel, to ensure that I will have a good fit and also to mark the correct placement of the end panel and the loops for the buttons. I place the button loops at the corners of the roof panel (the 2 3/4" x 6" panel). After I have marked the edges and the correct placement, I then remove the panels, leaving just the end panel and the button loops sandwiched, ready to be sewn on. .I used contrasting fabric for the roof panels and the garden panel, but you can use just a solid piece of material. I sew them like patchwork strips onto the main interior or exterior panels, using the pinning method to ensure correct positioning. Sew along line A to B, catching the bottom of the end panel and the edge of the button loops. .

5. Pin the handle between the fabrics, with ends facing outwards (optional). Sew along line C to D, catching the ends of the handle..
6. Repeat step 4 for the other long side of the rectangle. Turn it right side out and slide in the canvas panels in the order shown in the second diagram (roof panel - 2 3/4" x 6", then wall panel - 4" x 6", then floor panel - 4" x 6", then wall panel - 4" x 6", then roof panel - 2 3/4" x 6") . Pin between each panel to keep the panels in place. Turn the edges of the opening over and pin closed - pinning the ends of the other handle and an additional button loop (optional). It should now look like this:
7. Sew the opening closed, catching the ends of the handle and button loop, if used..

8. Add a couple of stitches between panels to keep the panels in place and remove the pins..
9. Hand sew the edge of the end panel to the wall and roof panel on each side, so that it forms this shape:
10. If using the button loop closure, sew buttons onto end panels and roof panel to match the loops. I appliqué the exterior decor on at this point (the window and door, in this example) as it is easier to position them correctly at this point. You're done. I know I'm not very good at explaining things clearly, so let me know if I've confused you. Really, they are very simple to make.

December already

One of thoses Weeks turned into one of those months. Now we are in December and I am working hard on figuring out what to get everyone for Christmas. David is getting what he wants for Christmas he just has to figure out how to pay for it then he will have his new toy. I bought the last of the presents for the kids last night. So it is just the extended family.

I have been working on making some things. PJ's for the 3 little ones.
a crayon holder for Derek based on the instructions found here. http://www.skiptomylou.org/2007/04/25/on-a-roll/
it turned out real cute.

I have also been making journals. We have a new quilt store in Highland and every month they have a free project if you buy the fabric at the store. This month they covered composition notebooks. Like the ones here.
http://craftapple.wordpress.com/2006/09/17/patchwork-notebook-cover-tutorial/

I did my first one like the instructions but I have done 3 others with a different style of piecing. I think the decorative stitches really add to the product. I can't do that on my machine so I have been going to Mom's and using hers while she is at work.

Have you ever had one of those weeks?

It all started last Saturday. Nicole was planning her 16th birthday party. I had a fun and memorable 16th and wanted the same for my daughter. Well Nicole's will be one she will never forget but not because it was so fun. Saturday morning we got a call that the night before Lindsay Sandstrom a 16 year old girl from our ward had been killed in a car accident and her Older sister was still in the hospital but expected to recover. Nicole and I immediately knew that we could not celebrate her birthday with this sad news in our ward so we changed the party plans invited all the young women over and started a scrapbook for the Sandstrom family. At 830 that night the High school had a memorial service so we took all our girls over to it. It was amazing and beautiful. I was surprised that they could put it together less than 24 hours after her death. I was able to see the family and Hug Connor Lindsay's brother that is one of my scouts.

Sunday the bishop presented Nicole as the newest member of the Laurel class and told the ward that Nicole was putting together a scrapbook for the family. All the Young women wore pink Lindsay's favorite color. Church was full of tears and they had a combined YM/YW third hour that ended with a huge hugging line.

Monday all the Young Women wore their Incredi Girl sweatshirts for Lindsey. It was the theme for camp this year. They told the girls the were incredible and needed to find the power within. This has become a symbol of Lindsay. The girls are all singing at the funeral and thought that they wanted to wear their sweatshirts. Courtney and I didn't think this was appropriate so we made pins for all the girls with the symbol. We made 65 pins with shrinky dink plastic. It was fun but by the end we were ready to finish.

Wednesday we were told to cancel all church activities but for some reason we decided to still have scouts we couldn't have it in the church so we decided the weather was so nice we had it at the pavilion. I was the first leader there and only 3 boys (17boys 3 leaders in all). Dallen before it started decided to jump some tables and missed and hit his mouth on a table and started bleeding very heavy. Another mother showed up and I left her in charge of the boys and took Dallen to instacare. he chipped 2 teeth has one permanent loose and scraped all the gums off the front top and has a gash in the inside of his lip. He was in shock and had blood all over. He can not bite anything for over a week and doesn't want to move his mouth. It didn't stop him from going to school today but his smile is gone because it hurts.

Wednesday night was Lindsay viewing. it started at 7pm so we showed up at 7:15. It was beautiful videos playing the hall lined up with scrapbooks to sign and pictures. I have never been in a line so long. It took over 2 hours to get the the family. The line went in the front doors across the overflow back through the gym and up the hall to the reliefsociety room.

The funeral is right now. I dropped the girls of early and the parking lot was full, cars were parked down the street. This was 45 minutes early. I decided not to go. I was going to be with my girls but they are singing and sitting on the stand so i would be taking the seat of someone who knew Lindsay. I am going to pick them up after and take them to lunch.

Six weeks already

It has been six weeks sense Marissa broke her leg. She has had a long hard time. She is a funny child and has made the best of the broken leg. I think her teacher will be glad when this is all over she has been very kind. I also think Marissa is at her most daring at school and her teacher has been very nervous that she would get hurt again at school. She updates me on Marissa's condition. The teacher is always asking Marissa should you be doing that? Like putting wood chips down her cast, walking without crutches, playing tag. She said yesterday they didn't have time for recess so she had the children run to a tree and back instead. The teacher told Marissa she didn't have to but Marissa did it on her crutches and beat several kids.

Yesterday we went to the doctors office and got Marissa's 3rd and most colorful cast off. The Dr. office know her by name and all the staff are very kind. Even if the nurses are not working with our Dr. they come in and say hi. Yesterday the plan was to get the cast off. The problem was we took off the last cast only 2 weeks ago because it was to tight and it was a struggle to get it off and Marissa was no a very good patient. I think it scared the Dr. This time he sent in a medical assistant to take it off. Her name was Jenni and Marissa likes her she has been at all the appointments taking X-rays and helping out. Marissa was so scarred from the last cast being taken off that she started crying right way. When Marissa gets scared she gets bossier. She was telling everyone what to do what to cut how to cut when to crack the cast. It took four of us to hold her down and she was still kicking and screaming. She then started to tell Poor Jenni that She was a terrible cutter and that Dr. Slack was much better at cracking the cast. About this time Dr. Slack got tired of all the screaming(or he worked up the nerve to face this 5 year old) Marissa was happy to see him for a second until he started cutting. The nice think about Dr. Slack is he just moved as fast as he could and got it off. The yelling and bossing around ended as the cast came off.

They took another Xray and poor Jenni had to do it. She looked like she was about to cry so I tried to make her feel better by telling her the mean things Marissa said about Dr. Slack after she left while he was cutting off the cast. The staff still loves her you can tell by the treats each one gives her when we visit. I think they want me to take her somewhere else if she breaks a bone again.

Beautiful Garden

David loves to work in the garden. It is fall and soon all his hard work from this summer will be covered in snow. Last weekend he went out and took some pictures of his Garden. He has beautiful flowers and vegtablels.

I love the purples and reds together. I didn't think I would because outside the garden I do not like those two colors together.

It took longet than normal to get our tomatoes but they are ripe now and good.

I was not sure if we would get corn. We have been eating it every other night for the past week.

Fabric covered travel babywipe containers

I have been asked to teach a class at Super Saturday. I made the mistake of standing next to our R.S. President as she picked up something at a boutique and I said " I could figure out how to make that" Guess what? Now she wants me to live up to my word. I thought might make a tutorial to help me teach the steps at the class. I have seen these on websites selling for as much as $32. Even if you go out and buy the wipe container and fabric you can still make it for about $5.

We are making covered travel baby wipe containers.
Materials needed.
travel baby wipe container
12x12 piece of fabric
1/2 yard of 3/4 to 1 inch ribbon
1 1/4 yard of 1/4 inch trim
scrap of batting for top.
hot glue gun and glue
1.Basically... fabric & trim is just hot glued onto the diaper wipe case. Cut your fabric larger than the case about 12x 12 inches
2. trace the lid and cut a piece of fiberfill to size. Place on top of wipe container and place fabric right side up on top of container.
3. starting in center top front hot glue a small strip. Fold the fabric under and glue to wipe case. I like to run the glue above the ridge on the case. Continue gluing the fabric on each side until you get to the corner.

4. flip the case over pull the fabric tight and repeat gluing the bottom of the case. We do not use batting on the bottom.

5. Now you repeat and do it to each of the sides.
6.When you get to the corners, you fold the fabric like you would as if you were wrapping a present. Trim away extra fabric & make sure that your case can still close properly.

7. Cut the ribbon for across the top and make bow. Glue to top of the case.
8.Now apply your ric-rac or any ribbons trim you like. Start & end at the back so that your case has a nice clean look I like to open the case to get a better angle . * The trim also covers any wobbly glued fabric . There...you're done.

Walking the pumpkins

Yesterday Derek came up from the basement with our Pumpkins. He has been walking them ever sense. He pulls them around by the plugs like he is walking a dog. I know it is only mid September but he really wants to put them up. We will have to go get some new bulbs for 2 of them because they do not lite up. I hope it is not because he has been dragging them around by the cords.

Nicole is Trying out Halloween Costumes. She thought she might try to be someone from Sweeney Todd. I thought she might try Mrs. Lovetts but no. So what do you think. I don't think they will let her wear it to school. I don't know the rules for the High School but at the J.H. They would not let them cross dress or have a weapon(even if it is just a table knife).

Only two at a time........

Those were Marissa's last words Two weeks ago before she broke her leg. You would have thought she might have learned a lesson. It has been a long 2 weeks. With 3 doctor visits and 3 days out of school. Marissa has to work hard to get around. It took her a week before she would use her crutches. She scooted around on the floor and wore a hole in her cast in less than a week. We had to go back so the doctor could patch the hole. I guess she is feeling better if she is jumping on the tramp again. You can't tell from the photo but her pink cast goes half way up her thigh.

Everyday Derek and I walk Marissa to school. I pull her and Derek in the wagon with her crutches and stroller. I leave her, the crutches and the stroller. After school Dallen gets Marissa in the stroller and pushes her home. When she gets home she is so tired. She even goes to bed at 830 no complaints. She use to stay up until 10 it is almost nice.

The second Saturday of each month Mom, Natalie and I take a quilt block of the month class. We just finished our third block. They do not show us what the quilt will look like they just give us the block of the month. The theme for the quilt is Americana. It is not my favorite but I did not want to sit the whole year out. I don't have a vision for what the quilt will look like but I do like the quilts that they have done the past 3 years so I hope this one will be as cute.

When we were at the store mom and I fell in love with this project so we have both started it.

I also saw another project that I liked your make a fabric bowl out of clothes line and fabric strips. I found instructions on the web. I hope to try it out this week.

life is a rollercoaster

I thought that life would get easier when the kids went back to school we would get in the grove and my life would be easier. Boy was I wrong. I have 4 kids in 3 different schools and all 4 start at different times.

WE have also had a few fun events. Lagoon with The Thompson's, a ward party, Shumways 50th wedding anniversary. School starting and Marissa's broken leg.

4 years ago Courtney broke her arm on the trampoline. This summer we figured it was finially time to put it back up. Yesterday Courtney and 3 friends were jumping Marissa got on and broke her leg. Courtney's friends didn't think it was broken. When we got back from the Dr. and they were all here they felt a little guilty.

She is doing good. It hurts and she can't move or bend it. She is on pain meds that make her silly and short tempered. Derek is doing a great job of taking care of her. She can't go back to school until she is off the pain meds and can use her crutches. She is waiting For grandpa to bring her MC donnals for lunch so it is not all bad.

Marissa's Birthday

Marissa loves to open presents and be the center of attention. So she loves her birthday. For Christmas she wanted a swimming baby and I thought that she would forget so I was very surprised when she asked for it again for her birthday. Grandma was kind enough to get it for her. She also got a Pink dress that she put right on.

The kids had to take a bath so they can play with the swimming baby. They put on their swimsuits and climbed in to play.

Grandma gave Dallen some play soap. He colored his whole body with it. They stayed in the bath for about an hour I had a hard time getting them all to get out of the bath.

courtneys birthday

Courtney loves to throw a good party. This year was no exception. We found beach towels in January for $1 each so we figured they would make great party favors for a swim party. We had the party on her real birthday May 16Th. I took the Girls to the American Fork Pool. We spent a few hours swimming then went home to have a barbecue. We finished with a baked Alaska and everyone loved it. The cousins ended up spending the night after everyone else went home.

I made my first Rag quilt. I had so much fun I couldn't stop until it was done. I got the pattern and fabric on the way home Saturday night at 11pm. I went to a baby blessing and 2 family dinners Sunday so I couldn't start until Monday. I cut it out Monday. Made the head Tuesday. finished it Thursday and Friday. It is not the only thing I did this week.
I had a scout meeting here
Birthday party for my 8 year old (21 kids)
slumber party for my 13 year old (only 4 kids)
baseball practice
baseball game
saw 3 movies college road trip, kung fu panda, and Horton hears a who
Kept my house clean
made dinner every night.

I love having a project to work on it keeps me motivated to get the housework done so I can work on it. I am not sure if I will make the panda quilt next or curtains for my bedroom.
Jill

kung fu panda

Today we decided to have a little family fun. For the first time ever we took the whole family to a movie. Before we went to the movie we had dinner at the Chinese buffet. Then we went to a matinee of Kung fu Panda. It was cute. Derek did not sit still so David and I had to make sure he stuck around and didn't run off. I would eat after the movie it has lots of references to food and I think Chinese after the movie not before might be a better choice. $80 later we are Fed and Derek fell asleep on the way home so I have a quite evening.

Lacrosse

Nicole decided that she wanted to play lacrosse. Some of the women from BYU's lacrosse team came to her Jr. High to get the girls excited about the sport and it worked. Her Jr high had enough girls for two teams.

Nicole was pretty good. It got a little hard to tell the girls apart with all the matching clothes and goggles. Nicole made it easy for us to spot her with her socks.

We all enjoyed watching her play it was a fast season they played 3 games a week for 3 weeks then had a tournament. They came in second at the tournament.

dance festival

Dance festival is one of my favorite things at the end of the school year. This year and every year the second grade dances to "Be nice to your Brother" They dress in colorful wraps and have a good time.

I had to zoom in to get a picture of Dallen I was on the correct side of the field but I was a little to far to the right of him. I was able to get a few shots of his dance moves. He did good. He knew the dance and looked like he was enjoying himself.

Dallen's birthday

It all started with an invitation. Dallen wanted an Indiana Jones Birthday party. Easy enough I made a digital one. I took an image I found on google and put the party words over it. I printed 10 copies knowing Dallen wanted to invite 8 friends. We decided we would use the water slide and have a water party so we asked the kids to wear their swimsuits after all it is June it should be nice. That was the first mistake. I left for my Scrapbook weekend and asked Dallen to deliver his invitations.

Nice photo of the kids at the party right? Well this is only half the party. Dallens 8 friends turned into 21. Then it rained all day the day before and on the day of the party the high was in the 50's. That ruined our plans for a water party. I spent the morning googling party games and we had the party in the garage.

It was nice enough that we could do some chalk art on the driveway. Dallen invited some good artist. The kids had fun.

The party was a big hit all the kids had fun and one of the favorite gifts was a 4lb bag of Swedish fish. It took the kids 2 hours to eat most of the fish. No one woke up last night with a tummy ache so I guess all is good.

dinner

Last nights dinner was a disaster. My bread bowls didn't turn out, I got carried away doing something else and the over rose and fell so they were more like disks. They tasted good but you couldn't put soup in them. We made sweat and sour meatballs instead. they were yummy.

I hope you don't see my lst post as patting myself on the back for cooking for my family. The studies that have been done said that family dinner was more about sitting down and talking than what you ate. I am not sure we did very good at the great dinner conversation last night either. Dallen got a whoopee cushion at school yesterday and all the little ones thought it was funny to put it on dad's seat every time he got up. After the third time we had it. Don't tell Dallen but we hid it with plans to get rid of it.

This is what I was doing when the rolls fell. It is a dish towel Apron. the dishtowel is Laura Ashley I loved the pink ribbon on the bottom and the flowers. All I had to do was cut part of it off sew it back on as a pocket and put a ribbon tie on it It was a very fast project only about 20 minutes and the towel was $3.

Family Dinner

I have been thinking a lot about dinner lately. My family eats together at the table at the same time more than 95% of the time. I make a meal for dinner. I do not just heat something up from Costco or make Mac and Cheese. I enjoy making dinner with my kids and the time that we spend talking and getting things ready. We set the table and all sit down together.

today I came across a radio tidbit about dinner that made me happy you can hear it here. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18753715

It basically says "The family dinner. About a decade ago, research started appearing on the family dinner, and the news was uniformly good. According to the scientists, children who ate with their families were less likely to drink, smoke, do drugs, struggle with asthma, get depressed and have eating disorders. "

It did say that it was just not the act of sitting down to eat together but that you were more likely to have good conversation which lead to all the positive things. So whats for Dinner? We are having homemade Chicken soup in homemade bread bowls.

So mom how do you Kill eggs?

I told the kids if they cleaned the toy room we could Dye Easter eggs. I guess this upset Marissa a little because she came into the kitchen and asked "So mom how do you kill eggs?" She figured it out pretty fast and had a great time Dyeing the eggs.
Derek was very good at dying eggs. He even got creative and did half one color and half another.

Dallen is an old pro. the kids colored over 2 dozen eggs in just 15 minutes. WE had a great Easter weekend. We spent Saturday afternoon playing games then hunting for eggs at Grandma Thompson's.

Sunday we went to church then To the Shumway's to celebrate Grandpa Dales 77th birthday. Each family wrote a list of 77 memories of Grandpa. It was fun to celebrate and learn some favorite Memories of Grandpa.

marissa

Marissa is a Doll a great child she keeps me on my toes. She loves to play with friends take care of her baby brother and get in trouble. Most of the time the things she does to get in trouble are so funny it is hard to punish her.

Last Sunday Courtney(12) bought Marissa(4) out of Church and said "Marissa has to give a talk in primary next week. Her teacher cave her a reminder note but can't find it she thinks Marissa ate it." That is so typical of Marissa. She gave her talk yesterday and did a great job. She loved it so much she gave it again to Grandma, Grandpa, Danny and Natalie last night. She wanted to give it to the home teacher but could not find her pictures that went with it, and you have to have the pictures.

Last night we went to Danny and Natalie's. Marissa made her Wii person and when she was done she turned to Natalie and said "she is so pretty, just like me" (I wish I had her confidence)

Marissa had her kindergarten Physical so we could register her for School. She is in the 25% for Height and Weight. They think she might also need Glasses she tested 20/50.

Marissa will be in the afternoon class and have Mrs. Christensen. I hope she is ready for Marissa.

The toy eater

Isabel my sister-in-law told me her kids cleaned up their toys ever night because they were afraid of the toy monster eating their toys. I told Marissa the story and she said "your just telling me that to get me to clean up" so I googled the poem by shel silverstien and found and animation of him reading it. marissa started cleaning up so fast. She even made sure there were no extra toys downstairs. I think I might have to play this every night as a bed time story.

Here is the link to the animation and the words to the poem.
http://www.shelsilverstein.com/html/books.asp?direct=true&directBook=falling&aniNum=1&aniEx=false
You don't have to pick up your toys, okay?
You can leave 'em right there on the floor,
So tonight when the terrible Toy-Eatin' Tookle
Comes tiptoein' in through the crack in the door,
He'll crunch all your soldiers, he'll munch on your trucks,
He'll chew your poor puppets to shreds,
He'll swallow your Big Wheel and slurp up your paints
And bite off your dear dollies' heads.
Then he'll wipe off his lips with the sails of your ship,
And making a burpity noise,
He'll slither away—
but hey, that's okay,
You don't have to pick up your toys.

wow it has been to long.

I can't believe it has been so long. I have been up to so much. I have been working on the Shumway cruise video but mostly I have been a bad mom.

1. Derek slammed(well Dallen helped) his finger in a door. poor thing was flat to his first knuckle

2. Derek poked a hole in his tong don't know how it happened because he doesn't talk much but we thought for a second about putting a ring in it.

3. Marissa and Derek cleaned the bathroom(upstairs) and flooded the toilet so that water was leaking out the light fixtures in the kitchen(downstairs).

In my defence I hurt my back and had a hard time moving for the toilet thing the rest was me just not being there to catch or stop what was going on.

On the lighter side we did have some fun we went to soldier hallow and rode tubes down the hill it was lots of fun.
